Historical Facts
The Drummond neighbourhood, bounded by the Saint John River, Salmon River and Little River, is home to a proud French-speaking rural community that makes its living primarily from the potato industry and cereal crops such as wheat, barley and oats. The picturesque potato fields, the wide open spaces, the valleys and the farmers’ daily lives make up a mosaic of nature and culture... that is undoubtedly a delight for visitors to discover.
- The impressive 65 m-high Canadian National Railway bridge, which spans the river and links the Drummond neighbourhood to the community of New Denmark, is the 2nd longest and highest railway viaduct in Canada.
- The Drummond neighbourhood is also home to Ron Turcotte, the jockey who won the Triple Crown racing in 1973 with the famous horse Secretariat. To this day, he remains the only French-Canadian jockey to have accomplished such a feat.
- More than half the potatoes grown are sold to McCain Foods for processing and the balance as seed potatoes for inter-provincial and international export.
